Why Madras Cafe was Appreciated

Bollywood movies are full of fun. They portray lot of emotions and discover a new story in those emotions. Some movies are based on comedy and some inherent a blend of action, thriller and drama. Every movie contains a transparent theme that generate footfalls in the theaters. Some movies succeed and some do not! It has been recorded that majority of the films which are based on comedy is preferred among the other genres as it has a psychological perception of being an entertainer. Madras Cafe which was released on 23rd August, 2013 broke this myth and achieved a new milestone in Bollywood history. It’s been a while since the film released but I think we should see the actual reasons behind its success.

Madras Cafe did not win because of John Abraham or Viacom. It worked because of it’s concept. Shoojit Sircar worked for 6 years to get this story on track. It was never promoted as a film which unfolds the truth behind Rajiv Gandhi assassination but its screenplay proved it to be real. When a film is based on a certain theme, it should not have an extra edge of glamour or entertainment but a subtle approach of being an intellectual flick with an understandable approach.

Well, that was technical; Madras Cafe was hit because this film carried a truth. It promised to be a film with no nonsense. Though people were not much persuaded from the trailers, it worked well after its release. Word of mouth helped the film to gain success. There was a thin line between the thoughts among the people whether it will have an entertainment quotient or not. But it did not carry any of it and focused on its theme. Shoojit Sircar’s work was appreciated and people liked the way it was played by John Abraham.

So three things worked for Madras Cafe:

1.      Concept
2.      Relevance
3.      No Nonsense
